He faces a gut-wrenching choice: If he reveals the plot, the terrorists will stop at nothing to get revenge, ruining his reputation, wrecking his family and putting everything he’s worked for and everyone he cares about at risk- or say nothing, and protect his loved ones – and himself.Paul Smith comes of age in Pakistan where his parents worked on a water purification project for the Peace Corps. Schooled in a madrassa, the impressionable youth is inculcated in jihadism by mujahedeen fighters battling the Russian army in neighboring Afghanistan. Local Islamists realize that once they defeat the Russians, their next enemy will be the oil-hungry West, particularly the United States. Paul could be a useful asset in that inevitable conflict. He is given a powerful short-acting sedative used in brainwashing and is told that he will one day be visited by two “angels” who will reveal to him how he will assist with jihad. Paul returns to the United States, graduates from law school, marries and goes to work for Miller and his law firm.Jim and Paul are hired to defend a lawsuit brought against an investment management firm acting as a front for terrorist conspirators. The conspirators tell Paul that they have a message from the “angels.” He must kill a Supreme Court justice who has repeatedly ruled against post-9/11 Guantanamo detainees. One detainee, a close childhood friend of Paul’s in Pakistan, committed suicide after years of detention. When Jim learns of the plot, Paul blackmails him to remain silent by threatening to reveal Jim’s many adulterous liaisons paid for by embezzling from the law firm.
